Redesigned Tizen OS changeable UI platform algorithm
Research
WHO ARE TIZEN USERS? Low segment, Feature phone migrators, Less literate, High aspirations users
RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the Personas of Low & Mid segment smartphone users of India in order to design the product better for them
OUTCOME: Personas that will Inform, Inspire & Validate the ideas and design solutions
RESEARCH PROCESS:
User Needs
Earn today, live today
24, Painter
Strong need for gratification due to their extraneous and restrained working conditions
GOALS: ROBUST, INSTANT
Less needs, greater value
24, Home maker
Due to liited outlook and lack of resources, they are focused on few but important needs
GOALS: EXPOSURE, CONFIDENCE
Virtue
62, Retired govt. officer
Having faced hardships in their life, they seek positive experiences for holistic wellbeing
GOALS: ASSURANCE, UPLIFTING
Status Update
19, Maid's daughte
They desire to climb-up and seek appreciation, due to lack of opportunities to prove themselves
GOALS: STYLISH, EXPRESSION
Hopeful dreams
24, Nurse
They are not held-back by their possessions, in the pursuit to realise their best
GOALS: PROGRESSION, UNIQUE
UX Goals derived from research
Regional yet Aspirational
Their innate needs are local in nature but they do look upon people higher on the ladder and hence aspirational needs as well. They want their phone to be as good as a flagship phone
Delight over Perfection
They desire simple & surprising UI, not perfect but joyful experiences
Problem statement 1
"Tizen phone colours are looking dull"
INSIGHT: Users want their phone to look and feel like a flagship phone (colors, ID, features).
Finding the root cause
Identified system problem
Changeable UI’s current algorithm reproduces colors incorrectly, resulting in dull or washed-out hues on the device’s screen.
What is 'Changeable UI'?
The Changeable UI system extracts colors from wallpaper and applies them to native apps such as Call, Calendar, My Files, etc. In this way, users can create a UI that is uniquely theirs.

Redesigned algorithm color application on Native apps
Solution
TFT screens on Tizen phones display user-intended colors brighter and more accurately by implementing a mesh gradient algorithm and improving the method used to extract colors.
Implementation tested with a variety of Tizen user wallpapers, including images of gods, portraits, landscapes, group photos, abstracts, and more. In all cases, the updated algorithm consistently produced brighter and more accurate colors. Users also preferred the updated experience after usability testing.
Problem statement 2
"Changing phone colour is complex"
INSIGHT: They desire for simple & surprising UI, not perfect but joyful experiences
PROJECT 2
Tizen Z4 wallpapers and themes
Designed and implemented Tizen Z4 wallpapers and themes and successfully persuaded the marketing and project management teams with the design rationale.
